Two Kinds Of Ads Which One Is Right For You?

Filed Under (Marketing Tips) by W.B.P.S. Marketing Tips on 26-05-2007

When it comes to placing ads on your website, you have a choice of 2 different kinds of advertising methods for your website:

  1. The Intrusive Kind – Pop-up ads, DHTML fly-over ads, flashing ads, or other methods that force your visitors to stop and look.

  2. Or, Non-intrusive – Text ads, articles, AdSense ads or those from a similar provider, non-flashing banners, or other methods that blend in with your website.

But, which one should you choose for your website?   The intrusive type ads increase attention paid to your ad, increasing your response… But, they also will often cause your repeat traffic to decline (not a good option for a content-filled site). The flashy banner ads also often lead to lower sales conversion rates because you are not able to attract the searcher who is most likely to purchase your product.

But, on the other hand, the non-intrusive ads often will fail to attract the amount of attention you want. Let’s look at the full range of pros and cons for each:

Intrusive Ad Benefits:

  • Attracts more attention – Forces the visitor to look at it and read your ad.

  • You can get creative with your ads to attract the visitors’ attention by showing them something they’ve never seen before. An example of this is when pop-ups first came out. People did not know what they were and they increased response like crazy. When you come up with new innovations, then you can do the same.

Negatives:

  • Frustrates the visitor – And if your audience is someone who spends a lot of time online (other than internet marketers), then your response could actually decrease your clickthrough rates.

  • Tends to reduce return visitors (not good for content publishers who rely on advertising income from these folks).

Overall recommendation as to whom this method would help: These type of ads are excellent for those who have one-time visitors, visitors who are not very targeted (or not similar), and whose visitors who are unfamiliar with these types of intrusions (don’t have a strong dislike for them yet).

Now, lets’ talk about the other option…

Non-Intrusive Ad Benefits:

  • Does not bother your visitors. They understand you have to make an income and so they have less resistance to them.

  • You have fewer restrictions on where they can fit into your content. (You are less likely to put a very distracting ad in the middle of your content.)

Negatives:

  • Has limited clickthrough rates. Most of your visitors’ eyes will glide right over these, and you will lose out on some added cash-flow.

  • If you have a third-party service like AdSense, then you have many limitations on how your ads will look. Although you can change a few things, there are many limitations in the format Google forces on you.

Overall recommendation for whom this would help: This method is the best option for anybody who publishes a lot of content and has many repeat visitors.

However, what I have not mentioned to you thus far is that you have a third category for advertising on your website… CB Maximizer.

It is a blend of the two that gives you full flexibility to design the ads your visitors are most likely to click on… and without the intrusion. So, you get higher clickthrough rates because your visitors are attracted to it, but you’re not causing annoyance.

If you would like to rise above the limitations of the other two advertising forms, then checkout CB Maximizer.
